Bulldog Health &  Well-being Initiatives

The primary difference between health and wellness is that health is the goal and wellness is the active process of achieving it. Wellness has a direct influence on overall health, which is essential for living a robust, happy, and fulfilled life. Living a healthy life is a balance and it includes several factors:  good nutrition, exercise, emotional health and so much more. Healthy eating is about balance. It may improve your mood, may give you more energy and might feed your body good nutrients. In accordance with CDC guidance, a healthy eating plan1:

  • Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains

  • Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products

  • Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts

  • Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars

  • Stays within your daily calorie need

We will focus our chapter’s health and wellbeing initiatives in the primary areas of: Fighting Hunger and Self-care.

OUR PRIMARY FOCUSES

Health: Fight Hunger

We will partner with churches, non-profit organizations, and local area food bank to help eradicate hunger and improve food deserts in underserved communities where we live, serve, and work. In the Delaware Valley alone, one in seven households are struggling against hunger. While the nation’s federal nutrition programs have a wide reach in Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Delaware way too many adults, children and potential Future Bulldogs continue to slip through the nutrition safety net.

Food insecurity and lack of availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food persist for too many households. Along with hunger, lack of access to healthy food contributes to obesity and poor health outcomes. The primary focus for these partnerships is to help eradicate hunger and bridge the nutrition gap by providing heathy food alternative and resources. The goal is to incorporate food pick-up points in our student recruitment efforts, in hopes that we educate communities at large and the families of Future Bulldogs with food hardship.

Well-being: Self-care

Self-care is important because we need to make sure to take good care of our body, mind, and soul every day, not just when you get sick. Learning how to eat right, reduce stress, exercise regularly, and take a time-out when you need it are touchstones of self-care and can help us stay healthy and happy. Here are 12 ways to get started with your self-care.

1. Make sleep part of your self-care routine.

2. Take care of yourself by taking care of your gut.

3. Exercise daily as part of your self-care routine.

4. Eat right for self-care.

5. Say no to others and say yes to your self-care.

6. Take a self-care trip.

7. Take a self-care break by getting outside.

8. Let a pet help you with your self-care.

9. Take care of yourself by getting organized.

10. Cook at home to care for yourself.

11. Read a book on self-care for self-care.

12. Schedule your self-care time, and guard that time with everything you have.
